A love triangle with too many sides.

“I wanted to make a film with more heart and tenderness, that was still a comedy, but I wanted to get away from people asking me about gross things.” – director Jim Hosking

Lulu Danger (Aubrey Plaza) is sleepwalking through the micro and macro aggressions of an appalling husband, trapped in a dead-end town. That is, until a hypnotic advert for ‘An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn’ (Craig Robinson), and a mysterious dork named Colin (Jemaine Clement), accidentally give her the chance to break free and hope for a life of grandeur and romance. But at every turn, a dropkick male (and there are many) will do his best to stop her from achieving her one true dream: A Lifetime with Beverly Luff Linn.

Featuring an outstanding cast at the top of their game and an exquisite darksynth score, AN EVENING WITH BEVERLY LUFF LINN zigzags between heightened comedy, melodrama and neo-noir. British director Jim Hosking presents us with a tale of human desires and hopes, a delightful and sparkling concoction that's closer in tone and style to FAWLTY TOWERS than Hosking's first feature, THE GREASY STRANGLER. Embracing transgressive awkwardness, Hosking’s films have frumpy weirdness pouring out in a torrent of broken human interaction that is reminiscent of the works of Yorgos Lanthimos (THE LOBSTER), and heavily inspired by the films of Hal Ashby and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. AN EVENING WITH BEVERLY LUFF LINN is a heart-warming tale for dreamers, lovers, farters, and op-shop fashionistas everywhere.

All sessions include a screening of short film The Elderly MacDonald (dir. Ben Volchok, 3 mins) before the film.

Originally scheduled for release in 1933, « Le vieux Macdonald », or "The Elderly Macdonald", was to be a groundbreaking short film, expressing the expansive menagerie of life. This was to be a sombre take on the "Old Macdonald" mythology, ushering in the French New Wave over two decades too early. Unfortunately, it was never completed, as renowned filmmaker Pierre Réalisateur failed to find any actors who could successfully mimic farmyard animals.

Now, fully restored - with one of our mates from the pub artfully recreating the sounds of the farm - Paracinema Fest is proud to present its world premiere!
