Primavera

“Director Damiano Michieletto deserves a standing ovation for how he has taken Primavera’s source material, Tiziano Scarpa’s novel Stabat Mater, and crafted something magical … A triumph.” – Loud and Clear Reviews

Cecilia is a gifted violinist confined to the Ospedale della Pietà, a secluded orphanage for girls in Venice in the early 18th century. The orphanage is renowned for its music program and the performances given by the girls attract audiences from all over Europe, even though the musicians must play while concealed behind a wall to hide their identities. When the orphanage hires an ambitious composer – none other than Antonio Vivaldi – as the new music instructor, Cecilia’s life changes overnight. Vivaldi recognises her extraordinary talent and encourages Cecilia to flourish – not only as a musician, but also to break free from the limiting expectations she has for her life as an orphan.

The debut feature film by Damiano Michieletto, an accomplished stage director particularly celebrated for his operas, Primavera is an arresting and absorbing tale based on the historical novel Stabat Mater by Tiziano Scarpa. The technical craft on display is spectacular – from the stunning cinematography to the lush production design and costumes, and of course, the magical score.

This film is co-presented by the Instituto Italiano di Cultura di Sydney.
