Four separate, yet interconnected tales, each a contemporary adaptation of a story by Hans Christian Andersen, showcasing the more macabre, ghoulish side of the master Danish storyteller.
A project coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Andersen’s death, four filmmakers (including Juhl, whose BLOODSUCKER we screened last year) working in close collaboration, with key creative crew across the whole production to maintain a cohesive film, unlike most anthologies. These sinister, superbly realised and performed segments – “The Dead Man”, “Story of a Mother”, “The Snow Queen”, and “Aunt Toothache” – are reminiscent of the sombre, formal elegance of KieÅ›lowski’s Dekalog series, where lost souls confront fate, love, and the darkness lurking beneath the surface.
