The Story

Lady Macbeth, the feature film debut from acclaimed theatre director William Oldroyd, is a Gothic tale of a young woman trapped in a marriage of convenience in 19th century England, whose passionate affair unleashes a maelstrom of murder and mayhem on a country estate. One of the most talked-about sales following its world premiere at TIFF, this “seductive mix of sex, murder, proto-feminist subtext and fabulous frocks” (Hollywood Reporter) has garnered widespread praise. The film also announces the arrival of a major screen talent in its 19-year-old lead actress Florence Pugh, who critics are calling “a revelation” (Screen Daily), “simply transcendent” (Vox), and “the great discovery of TIFF” (Vogue) in the lead role of Katherine. Her struggle to assert herself in a cold and unfeeling world leads ultimately to chaos, invoking “female literary outlaws from Madame Bovary to Anna Karenina to Lady Chatterley” (Hollywood Reporter).Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2016 Sans Sebastian Film Festival, Lady Macbeth “builds up intensity from the word go and leaves audiences gasping” (Financial Times) with an electrifying story of love, passion and betrayal.
